Larensy Rogers, July Keepers of the Flame Scholarship Recipient
My name is Larensy Rogers and I am from Natchez Mississippi, and live in Hattiesburg. I am a college student and a young business owner. I am 21 years old.
I am currently studying Public Relations and Advertisement with a minor in Spanish at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). My graduation date is May 2023. My goal is to locate a job and use the skills I learn from that job to advance my business. Although a degree is great, experience is equally important to me.
My business is called LR Communication and Consulting. I operate in Mississippi. My goal is to assist small business owners by providing them with valuable informing from consulting, creating campaigns that can expand business growth, to creating commercials and much more.
I pray that you consider me for this award because as a black, visually impaired, woman, it is hard to receive educational funding for some of my particular needs. If you chose me for this award, I will split the scholarship between my business and my education. I will use half to purchase the software I need to create things for my clients. I need to purchase adobe, Canva, rights to music, podcast equipment and renew my own website domain. For my education, I need to pay my utility bills so I can live in housing that is close to campus. I have to live close to campus because I cannot drive and transportation is expensive. I also need to purchase SD cards, online books, and other equipment that the department requires students to purchase to attend classes.
When I arrived at USM, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I went to career services and based on everything I’ve done and was passionate about, they led me to pick this major. For your reference, I was a student ambassador and tour guide at the Mississippi School For the Blind, I have spoken to the FBI about disability rights, to lawmakers in Washington D.C. about passing laws for people with blindness and much more. When I got into this field, I realized I loved helping businesses grow. Then, I started interning for Black Women DO Heal and I recognized that small businesses need the most Public Relations help. That made me adjust my purpose to aim my assistance towards helping small businesses.
Although I have faced challenges along the way, I know I will succeed because I have put my mind, heart, and work ethic together to drive me to the finish line. In addition, I currently have a 3.3 GPA in college. I have also been working with many companies and people to make sure I am headed in the right direction and preparing to take the next best steps in climbing this academic and lifelong ladder.
I will “Pay it Forward” to other ladies in education and business by helping them grow their businesses and teaching them the ropes of Public Relations. Most business owners do want to work in PR, and it is great for all of them to understand how it is done. I am also willing to test their products and services and provide reviews and feedback to aid them in making adjustments to better their businesses. I want to benefit the black community and ladies by using the skills I have learned combined with my natural talents to help them get the best out of Marketing and protecting their businesses.
