HERStory: Candy Martin

Can you tell us about what it was like for you growing up?

Love… I was very loved. Even though my family was poor in money, I was (am) rich in love… It sounds cliche but true. I was raised by a single mother and her parents. I often reflect on the fun times not realizing we were poor until later in life. My mother taught me to treat people right above all the great advice she gave me. I grew up blessed- in spite of the trials I ensured, I truly believe I was given the tools of strength and love growing up.

What life events impacted you most?

During my junior year in high school- the loss of my first-born child, my daughter, Angelique’. It was a situation that allowed me to see so much of the reality of this world… The impact showed me the harshness of some people, the kindness of many, and struck home of how short life really is. To this day, I know this is a huge part of my appreciation for life.

How did you get to become where you are today?

The Grace and Mercy of God, prayers of my mother, support from my husband and children; also, some business guidance from a short list of some amazing friends.

What inspires you each day?

Knowing that God has given me another chance to try it again. I hate wasting time and I can be pretty hard on myself if tasks aren’t complete.

What would you tell other women who are struggling?

There’s no reason to struggle, ASK for help… We often struggle either out of procrastination, lack of seeking the information, by not taking action or pure pride of “not asking nobody for nothing” mentality.

Is there anything else about your story that you’d like to share that we haven’t asked?

I am truly thankful for the opportunity to share a part of my journey and I ask you all to stay connected with me as I attempt to make a positive difference in this world through my financial education efforts with the AK Legacy Foundation’s Women-N-Business Project.
