12 May Keepers of the Flame Scholarship May 2022: Tiffany Brown
Tiffany Brown, owner of Wicks NOLA Candle Company in New Orleans
When Tiffany’s brick-and-mortar business experienced a fire, she knew she wanted to rebuild her hard work. Before the incident, she ran a successful e-commerce and physical business and was on an amazing trajectory.
Recently named a recipient of the Keepers of the Flame Scholarship, Tiffany was awarded funds to help her continue to lead. “As a business, we have always given back to the community. We will always make that a priority,” says Brown, in response to receiving the scholarship and continuing to give back.
Wicks NOLA Candle Company was named one of Oprah Magazine’s 22 best scented candles, and Tiffany continues to take her passion for candles all the way to the top. She started her company when she discovered some of her favorite candles weren’t necessarily made with the best ingredients. In fact, they had a slight artificial chemical odor and left behind soot on her walls.
While searching for luxury brand, clean-burning candles, Tiffany found some that she loved, but noticed they were overpriced, so she took matters into her own hands. Through research and hard work, she learned to create her own clean-burning, vegan home fragrances and has expanded to offer room sprays, wax melts, and diffusers as an environmentally friendly alternative to the big box brands. She believes everyone deserves healthy fragrances without breaking the bank, so she created her line at a fair price for all to enjoy.
A New Orleans native, one tradition Tiffany had with her late father was to explore the Big Easy like a tourist. Riding the street cars from the Garden District to Treme, their adventures together inspired her rich love for the city, and each hand-selected candle scent brings fond memories of her favorite places and their time together.
A go-getter since the age of 15, Tiffany developed a strong work ethic, and since starting her candle line, she and her husband are infusing their values to their two teen daughters. Wicks NOLA has officially become a family affair; and you will find Tiffany and her close-knit family displaying the strong sense of purpose that she grew up with at her first brick-and-mortar location in Kenner, Louisiana. As a successful display of the strength and determination that comes with being part of the African American community, Tiffany enjoys inspiring others to realize their dreams by sharing her story of success.
