15 Dec HERstory: Brittany Young
As we enter the holiday season, we’re highlighting HERjoy and sharing the inspiring stories of women. Meet Brittany Young, who overcame alcohol abuse and is now a business owner and coach!
Can you tell us about your story?
My battle with drinking began at 17 after being sexually assaulted by someone I trusted after a night of partying. I was told by them to keep quiet and not tell a soul what happened. So, I did for over a decade, and drinking helped me mask the pain. I drank to forget that memory but also as a way to fit in. I didn’t know who I was from 17-27, and being an alcoholic gave me an “identity,”; allowing me to fit in with some group of people finally and disassociate from myself. It felt safe to drink, even though it was not the accomplishment I desired to be remembered for. Drinking gave me the courage and the audacity I needed to be strong and cover up my wounds. However, when each person in my life started to disappear, including family, I knew there were only two options left: death or quit. On the night of September 18, 2013, I decided to stop drinking and never look back. It was the day my life began, and my life has never been the same. Today I am nine years, two months and 24 days sober, married to the other half of my heart, and we have a two-year-old daughter named Avery. We own multiple homes, we run multiple six figure businesses, and we share sobriety and recovery as part of our journey together.
Could you share a moment in your coaching career that bought you JOY?
There are two very special moments that have brought me immense joy in my coaching practice. The first is a client doubling her revenue after a year of working together. She was stuck in her financial advisory business, and nothing was moving the needle for her. She hired me, and after two months of working together, her revenue went from $20K a month to $50K a month. It stayed consistent at $50K a month throughout our time together, and she even received a $150K bonus check from her firm. Because of the increased income, she could take Fridays off, pick her children up from school and work less while making money. She also stopped working for someone else and opened up her own RIA financial firm this year in 2022 and has already experienced 200% growth. To say it brought me joy is an understatement; she changed my life, and I hope I helped change hers.
The second moment that brought me joy this year was being asked to speak at Harvard University, which will happen in January 2023. I stumbled upon a Facebook friend of mine who was receiving college speaking opportunities, and I was very intrigued. I sent her a message, and she told me she would introduce me to a gentleman who interviewed her to be part of his speaking circuit. I asked for an introduction; he interviewed me and the next thing I knew, I was saying yes to speaking at one if not the most prestigious university in the U.S.!
Who/ what inspired you to create Young Wealth?
Young is my married name, and Wealth in all areas of a woman’s life is what I stand for. When you put the two together, they have a nice ring to them, don’t they 😉
What inspired me to create Young Wealth was my own childlike curiosity, plus working with female financial advisors as my clients. My entire mission behind the brand is to help women not only change how they feel about creating wealth in their life but actually take action to make it happen. The etymology of the word Young means new, fresh and a vital force. Wealth’s etymology means well-being, happiness and prosperity. So put the two together, and you get “new well-being, a vital force of happiness and a fresh perspective on prosperity”! That is what Young Wealth means!
